Find Oklahoma County Jail inmates...

Inmates

Interview with Luis, Kelly, Krissie, Cheryl, Tina and Shaylee

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Luis: Not for the most part I didnt. Of course there were a couple of obnoxious black kids but there wernt a big deal. anytime you get around blacks you just gotta expect them to be loud and obnoxious and just deal with it as best as possible. these kids understood very quickly that the rest of us wernt gonna put op with their crap so they got in line after a few minutes.

Note: Jail Media does not condone racism in any way, shape or form. We thought we would be doing our readers a disservice, however, by censoring interviews - it is important for anybody wondering about what jail is like to understand what mentality really exists in jail.
Kelly: no
Krissie: No. Even though there are always the bad ones, there is an overall feeling of camaraderie among the female inmates.
Cheryl: No, I didn't have too much trouble with other people in there
Tina: No not really
Shaylee: No it wasnt difficult to get along because i didnt have to prove myself to anyone

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Luis: Not much since we were all locked down in two man cells for 72 hours at a time without a shower might I add.So it was just me and my cellie and we just mostly read books and talked.
Kelly: kept to myself
Krissie: I just avoided the loud ones because they usually make the most trouble.
Cheryl: I just kept my head down, avoided arguements or anything.
Tina: Stayed to myself and stayed out of other inmates business. Mostly played cards
Shaylee: Just watch EVERYTHING from a distance

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Luis: No way man!! What have you been smoking?
Kelly: no
Krissie: No, they put me in a cell with two other women. It was crowded, but we got along.
Cheryl: No
Tina: Did not know any
Shaylee: No that never happens unless you r there a very long time and i believe that none of the employees dont want to take the few minutes to change cell info in their computer system even if it could save a life or resolve issues of violence

A Justice Department report rips the Oklahoma County jail as a chaotic and largely unsupervised den of "unconscionableā€ violence, abuse and medical neglect.

Detailed in the federal report are jail deaths, excessive use of force and a "disturbingā€ incident in which a pregnant woman was handcuffed to a rail for 10 hours while giving birth to a premature baby.
The child died at a metro-area hospital.

However, the seriousness of the report led the U.S. Marshals and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to transfer 160 federal inmates from the Oklahoma County jail over the weekend to jails in Tulsa and Grady counties until the issues are officially resolved.

The report details excessive inmate-on-inmate violence and use of force by jail staff, an unsanitary kitchen with birds and insects, lack of clothing and showers, several fire hazards and virtually no mental health treatment. There is also an inadequate investigatory process to review deaths and other serious incidents, according to the report.
The U.S. Attorney General could file a lawsuit against Oklahoma County if conditions do not improve, according to the report.

I hope the DOJ takes them over! I am voting NO on the new tax they are going to propoe. At least if DOJ does it then we know it is done right. They have been under investigation since 2003, enough already. If you want to keep him as sheriff fine, BUT he has no business running a jail. I only hope that too many more babies dont die or people get beaten to death before this ends. It makes me sick that this goes on in America.

you people are fast to forget that these people are not here for helping the homeless or helping old ladies across the street.Excessive use of force is not tolerated.Michelle you have no idea what you are talking about we passed with alot of really good things being said about this place. The main problem is the building its self. And as far as inmates not having water for 24 hours that is only what happens when inmates flood their cells and or use their water in inappropriate ways.If you dont like the way that we as employees run the jail you come and work one day with some of the states harden criminals you try and be their best friends. And as far as people talking about their tax dollars being used poorly what do you think we as guards are paying out of check which ill remind you is not that much. You come up here you apply for a job where u can possibly get hurt or get killed make around 12 dollars a hour get paid once a month work 12 hour shifts and are always understaffed because people call in or quite because of the pay,and then you come to a site like this and read all the false statements written by people who know nothing of how the inside of this place works or what a regular day for a detention officer is like.We are always hiring and I mean always so come on up here michelle come change how terrible everyone gets treated and i am sure that you will understand the only people really mistreated are the people who serve you the Community the detention officers what a way to show respect to those who do a job that 3 out of 4 people would not consider because of the risk we all Appreciate it here at the oklahoma county sheriffs office

Hey david:

1) If you don't like your job then do society a favor and QUIT.

2) Have you ever read the U.S. Constitution? Are you aware that all citizens are entitled to a presumption of innocence until proven guilty? This is a county jail, not the DOC.

Are you really that ignorant of the Constitution of this great nation? Just wondering, have you EVER read it?????

Oh and yes, i was there recently and personally witnessed what the USDOJ was talking about in their report. It is all true and then some.

I do have a question (and don't deny this because I know better). Why does the staff start to panic and hurridly transfer inmates from overcrowded cells when the Feds show up? What's with the dog and pony show?

I understand some of what you are saying, david. It's not that you are lazy. It's just that you only make $12 per hour and job is difficult and you are understaffed so that excuses your personal conduct and poor work product.

as of 4-7-10 the conditions have not improved. I'm not sure what the the DOJ investigated but it did not do a good job, it smells like trash the floors are mopped with a dirty mop and this is the visiting room. In late Feb early March one of the floors did not have water for 24 hours. Contacted the person in charge and it was stated that they were working on getting it fixed and they were bring the inmates water every two hours, that was a lie. I understand the reason they have jail, but they are human beings and they dont deserve to be treated like they are living in the wild. I agree with you totally he should not be running a jail and most of the people that he has employed there should not be working there. I feel my tax dollars was poorly spent and someone higher up should take a look into this matter. the DOJ should come unannounced and they would be shocked to see the poor conditions.
